Thank you notes have a reputation for being the dreary chore at the end of a joyful season. They don’t have to be. A handwritten note is one of the last genuinely personal gestures left in circulation, and the people who receive one tend to keep it for years.
The Timing Rules Worth Knowing
The old advice granted couples a full year, and that guidance is thoroughly outdated. Modern etiquette sources generally recommend sending notes within three months of the wedding. Gifts that arrive before the wedding deserve a faster turnaround, ideally within two weeks of receiving them, because that also confirms the gift landed safely.
The practical trick is to never let the pile grow. Write notes in small batches as gifts arrive rather than facing a mountain of a hundred and fifty after the honeymoon. Twenty minutes twice a week beats one miserable weekend. Track everything in a simple spreadsheet with columns for the guest, the gift, the date received and the date you sent the note. This is also the single best task to hand a helper.
What Makes a Note Land
A good note runs three or four sentences and does three things. Name the specific gift, say something true about how you’ll use it and connect it back to the person. Thank you for the Dutch oven, we’ve already made two batches of soup in it and thought of you both is worth more than any amount of formal phrasing.
For cash or checks, mention the amount indirectly by naming its purpose rather than the figure. Your generous gift is going toward our kitchen renovation reads warmly. For guests who traveled, thank them for the trip itself. Their presence was the gift. Both names should appear if a couple gave together, and each note should be handwritten even when the handwriting is objectively terrible.
